The Formula for Success - Ross Brawn

Brawn GP had a monumental start to their rookie Grand Prix campaign

Their first year of motorsport has produced astonishing success.

But like every person, team or company that performs above the rest, it isn`t too long before the opposition raises their game and fights back.

Roll the time forward......

We are in the middle of the season and Brawn GP is not winning any more races. The opposition has closed them down - Red Bull, McLaren, Ferrari and even Renault have closed the gap.

Brawn GP is falling back against the competition and how they deal with this situation is crucial to their success as a Grand Prix team.

In business, similar situations occur regularly. A company that has been very successful suddenly or gradually sees sales slide and profits diminish. Often losses occur and then businesses fail. In fact, no company rides on the crest of a wave forever. And the ability to deal with the tough times sorts out the business men from the boys.

In Brawn GP`s case the signs are there that the team could fall apart.

Rubens Barrichello, one of their drivers, gave into an outburst that the team had let him down in the German GP is an early sign of blame, fragmentation and finger pointing. A decline always results in increased pressure - how the Team stick together and work is vital.

Look at your business. Are you working as a team? What can you do when things are beginning to slide?

As a leader in difficult times, your priority is to stay calm and stay focused.

Ross Brawn, team leader at Brawn GP is a perfect example of a leader staying calm under intense pressure. Outbursts from individuals like Rubens Barrichello have calmly been brought in- house. In Rubens` case it is only natural to sometimes exhibit a moment of frustration. Frustration and anger can be considered positive emotions if channeled correctly and can actually bring about superior performance.

Staying focused is the next skill. In Brawn GP they have an ultimate aim and that is to win both the Drivers and Manufacturers Championship. In your business what is your vision? What are your goals? Over 90% of businesses and business owners do not have this in place. If Jenson Button didn`t have an idea of where he wanted to go or, even if he did, how to get there, what would happen?

Well he would not achieve!

Many times in business, an unusual and totally random incident can bring the business to its knees. One classic example of this is Barings Bank which collapsed through an incident that should not have occurred but did. Once again, the reaction of the leader of the situation was instrumental in the final outcome – unfortunately in this case, not a good one. How a Leader copes with these situations brings strength top the whole organisation – and there is rarely a rehearsal for something of this magnitude!

Ross Brawn at Brawn GP has this strength. His resilience and leadership qualities that put him ahead of the competition.
